Bikes only day in central London
Plans have been announced for a cycling event for the general public on the streets of central London where traffic will be banned for the day. London Freewheel takes place on Sunday 23 September and 9 miles of roads along the Thames will be shut off to cars in the mass participation event designed to encourage more people to cycle.
The roads closed will include Tooley Street from Tower Bridge to London Bridge on the south side of the Thames, over the river to Thames Street and along the Embankment to St James’s Park. To take part you just need to sign up on the Freewheel website which is free. They’re also organising Freewheel Hubs in six parks around London where cyclists can meet up and ride into central London together. The Hubs will have food and drinks stalls, experts to help with any bike problems and toilets. The parks in question are Finsbury Park, Victoria Park, Peckham Rye, Clapham Common, Ravenscourt Park and Gladstone Park.
The roads for London Freewheel are closed from 11am-4pm and there are entry points to get onto the route marked on their map.
